The Clutch MOV Staff shares their vaccine bucket list

For most of the world, 2020 was a year of isolation, working from home, and socially-distanced outings. For those who have spent more than a year stuck at home or avoiding large crowds, the COVID-19 vaccine is a major milestone and certainly a welcome one. Vaccination numbers are increasing across the country and folks are rejoicing in their ability to once again do the things they took for granted pre-pandemic. Our team at Clutch MOV shares what they were most looking forward to doing once vaccinated and why getting the vaccine was important to them.

Meryl Williams: The first thing I did the weekend after I was fully vaccinated was take my also vaccinated mother-in-law and sister-in-law to Trader Joe’s, the grocery store/snack dispenser of my dreams. We ate inside a restaurant beforehand — the first time I’d done so since March 13, 2020. It was amazing. I am so relieved to have the vaccine, because it means I can start returning to normal life without the fear of either getting sick myself or inadvertently spreading COVID-19 to those around me.

Olivia Reeder: Normally, our family visits Disney World every year at Christmas, but we didn’t go this past year due to COVID-19. While we had a wonderful Christmas in West Virginia, one of our gifts to ourselves was to reserve a vacation package for Christmas 2021 in hopes that we would be able to go. As they say down there, dreams do come true. I’m happy to report that, as of last month, we’re all vaccinated and will be headed “home” in approximately 220 days.

Emily Rowley: I wanted to get vaccinated so I could be around my family and loved ones without feeling like I was putting them in harms way. So it sounds silly, but the thing I wanted to do most afterwards was just…hugging people. And I’m not generally “a hugger,” really. But you don’t realize how much you can miss human contact until you go a year without touching anyone.

Jennifer Bryant: I feel fortunate to have been fully vaccinated for a month now because there are many countries lagging far behind the US. Visiting with my dad, who has pre-existing conditions, was at the top of my list. A return to traveling ranks pretty high, too!

Joe Stephens: I’m really excited for concerts! My wife Sarah got tickets for me and our daughter Lauren to see Elton John. Unfortunately, it’s still not clear when or if it will ever happen. Hopefully he doesn’t retire for good!

Laura Pytlik: I am excited to hold my new grandson without wearing a mask, and kiss that tiny face! We’re also looking forward to celebrating the 95th birthday of my mother-in-law with lots of hugs and family time.

Sarah Arnold: Now that I’m fully vaccinated, I’m most excited to visit with my grandparents, whom I haven’t seen in more than a year, and hold my brand new nephew! I’m also looking forward to returning to in-person church service, dining in crowded restaurants, and traveling without worrying about maintaining social distance.

Haven’t received your vaccine yet? Learn more about the vaccine and how you can schedule to get vaccinated through the Washington County Health Department and the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department.

Compiled by Laura Pytlik, Olivia Reeder, and Sarah Arnold

This holiday season, as stories spread about huge backlogs with the Postal Service and delays with “big box” store orders, more and more people have discovered the simple pleasure of shopping local. We’ve always been passionate about supporting artists and small makers as a source of unique gifts, and this year more than ever we repeat the mantra of “shop small, shop local.”  Sadly, nearly all the pop-up markets and holiday shows were cancelled, and many of you have missed the opportunity to engage with the creative artisans and see their products in person.

We want to share with you some of the many talented makers that live and work in the Mid-Ohio Valley. You’ll find people who create everything from soap to jewelry to pottery to original art, and you’ll surely get some inspiration to gift someone or just to treat yourself. Although the holiday is quickly approaching and not all the items you see can be shipped in time for Christmas, many makers offer local pickup and stock their items in local shops and boutiques. And gifting isn’t just for Christmas – the opportunity to buy unique, handcrafted items and support local artists happens throughout the year!

Primrose Designs

Owner Courtney Strahler creates wood signs, ornaments, décor and more that fit any style or occasion, from witty to trendy to sweet. She also makes the wood frames herself, and takes custom requests. Distance Socially, Shop Locally

With events being canceled, social businesses closing to the public, and communities preparing to hunker down, our small businesses need our support more than ever. There are many ways you can continue to support your favorite small businesses in creative ways. If you cannot shop in person, maybe you can order online or make arrangements for pick up. You can order a gift card now, to shop with later once life returns to a new normal. You can invite your friends to like their Facebook page, follow their Instagram account, or subscribe to their email list. What about leaving them a glowing review on Google, Yelp, or Facebook? A little goes a long way in making a difference – especially in these unprecedented times of great uncertainty.

We have compiled a list of locally-owned shops and businesses offering adaptive services, whether it’s e-commerce, shipping, virtual services, or other methods of continuing their operations while maintaining social distancing. We encourage you to follow your local businesses on social media, check their website, or give them a call to learn more and continue to support our local business community as much as you are able.

We will continue to add to this list! Please let us know if we have left someone out so that we can add them, by leaving a comment or emailing sarah@clutchmov.com. Check back for updated information.

Distance Socially, Eat Locally

As of March 15th,  Governor Mike DeWine  announced that all bars and restaurants in the state of Ohio were to close to eat-in diners, but could continue to provide delivery, carryout, and curbside services. Governor Jim Justice signed a similar order in West Virginia days later. The Mid-Ohio Valley is home to dozens of quality, independent, locally-owned restaurants and as a community, we encourage you to continue coming together to keep each other healthy and support small businesses. Our small business community is essential; these businesses are owned by our neighbors and friends, and contribute to the quality of life we enjoy here in the MOV. Even though our bars and restaurants are closed for public dining, we can still enjoy their delicious food while maintaining safe, social distancing.

We have compiled a list of independent local restaurants and eateries offering adaptive services, whether it’s delivery, curbside pick-up, pick-up at the door, or carryout. Many restaurants have already begun promoting the variety of ways they will continue to serve the community during these unprecedented times. Be sure to follow your local restaurants on social media, check their website, or give them a call to learn more and continue to support our local business community as much as you are able.

We will continue to add to this list! Please let us know if we have left someone out so that we can add them, by leaving a comment or emailing sarah@clutchmov.com. Check back for updated information.

When you shop local and patronize a small business, you are keeping dreams alive! The dream of owning a business, the dream of an artisan to have their products featured, and the dream of a community to have a thriving downtown that enhances their quality of life. For every dollar spent at a locally owned business, 70 cents stays in the community, versus only 40 cents of each dollar spent at a big box or chain store. As this Saturday is Small Business Saturday, we thought we would share a list of as many independent, locally-owned small businesses as we could! We are sure there are a few we have missed, so please do not hesitate to leave a comment and let us know, and we will continue to update and add to this list over the next month.

While we had also hoped to share with you each location’s hours and specials throughout the holiday season, this turned out to be more than our volunteers were able to pull together. Instead, we encourage you to follow your local small businesses on Facebook and social media and visit their websites to learn more about all they have to offer this Christmas season. We are truly blessed to live in a community with so many locally owned businesses. By supporting our neighbors by shopping local, we have the power to help grow our economy from the ground up.

We know we don’t generally touch on issues in the national narrative – but we felt as though it was important to share a few thoughts from our friends at Local Independent Online News (LION) Publishers regarding how the repeal of Net Neutrality would affect local media sites like Clutch MOV.

Repealing Net Neutrality would allow giant chain media to work in concert with internet conglomerates to limit access to independent, alternative, and local news sites, warned LION Publishers about the upcoming vote by the FCC.

“Giving a clear go-ahead for a tilted playing field would be the result if the Federal Communications Commission tosses out Net Neutrality,” said Dylan Smith, LION’s chairman and the publisher of TucsonSentinel.com.

Local Independent Online News Publishers is a national nonprofit organization with more than 180 members operating locally focused news sites in 42 states. The group issued a statement on Monday expressing deep concern about the FCC’s proposal to scrap Net Neutrality rules.

“Access to information and local journalism that holds government and other powerful institutions accountable is essential to a functioning democracy, economic well-being, and human rights,” said LION Executive Director Matt DeRienzo. “These pillars are already under severe strain from the dominance of a handful of large tech platforms, and the rapid consolidation of the newspaper and broadcasting industry under the control of a few enormous corporate chains.”

Local independent online news sites are springing up all over the country to fill gaps in local journalism, but they rely on an Internet based on a level playing field for all publishers and readers, regardless of size or resources.

If Net Neutrality goes away, big Internet and wireless providers will be able to charge individual publishers for levels of speed and access, a scenario in which a handful of big companies with deep pockets could squeeze out the kind of small, independent news publishers who are part of LION. This would severely limit citizens’ access to information and could be devastating to local news, which big publishers have whittled to the barest of bones.

Essentially, content from MegaChainNews or CorporateInterestNetwork would be served up as fast as possible, if those corporations paid up. Smaller publishers — including especially local indie outlets — would be shoved aside into a “slow lane.” With studies showing that many readers will abandon slow-loading pages, that means news that isn’t backed by the deepest of pockets would be far less likely to reach the eyes and ears of those who would be purposefully led toward more lowest-common-denominator clickbait.

“The FCC’s proposal would destroy the Internet as we know it by allowing IPSs to limit or block content,” said Charlotte-Anne Lucas, director of NOWCastSA in San Antonio and a founding member of LION’s Board of Directors. “Our news organization streams government meetings and public events, giving people greater access to government. Scuttling the principles of Net Neutrality would undermine our very democracy by allowing cable, phone and other Internet connector companies to throttle our content and limit the public’s access to government.”

“As a former ISP owner and telecom executive, I concur with the need to have the FCC prevent higher, faster, better service being provided solely to online media that pays huge extra tolls to telecom companies,” said Joe Hyde, the publisher of San Angelo LIVE! in Texas and a member of LION Publishers. “The companies that run the Internet backbone and provide direct customer connections have the ability on the tech end to throttle our small sites — which they can do in an overall or individually targeted way — making real local news less accessible than traffic for a chain media property that pays them. And that would stifle both future innovation and our ability to build sustainable, lasting local news organizations.”

“If you don’t like dealing with your cable company or picking a service package for your cell phone today, imagine what it would be like if all of your Internet activities were affected by what giant media companies were willing to pay extra for, behind the scenes,” Hyde said. “Without Net Neutrality, that’ll be what we all get.”

Added Teresa Wippel, publisher of the My Neighborhood News Network just north of Seattle and a member of LION’s Board of Directors: “This proposal threatens the very nature of open online access to vital news that in many communities is citizens’ only source of information. Any proposal that slows down or blocks to access to news content that people need to become fully informed citizens is unacceptable.”

Internet commerce has grown by leaps and bounds in large part because it has been an equal playing field. ISPs certainly should be able to base their rates on the quantity of data being transmitted, but they should not be in the business of setting rates based on the types of content that they convey to readers, viewers and users. They certainly should not be able to provide favored status to those content creators and data services who pay them more. The proposal to eliminate Net Neutrality rules would create an opaque layer of market manipulation that will serve to enrich the few at the expense of many, and undermine the free flow of news and information that is essential to our democratic society.

Clutch MOV is a proud member of LION Publishers. We rely on support from readers and the local business economy to keep bringing you positive, local content. Click here to find out how to support our efforts.

Due to a number of circumstances and delays which we won’t bore you with, this labor of love has been in the works much, MUCH longer than we ever anticipated. But we are in the home stretch! Over the next month, we will be wrapping up the final touches and sending this beauty off to print. Issue 03 has been, by far, the most difficult issue to pull together for our volunteer staff – and much of this has to do with the intimate nature of the content itself. In the end, we hope that when you finally have it in your hands, you will agree that the wait was worth it. Thank you for sticking with us and checking in, and know that we are just as eager and excited to see it finished as you!

Sincerely,

Clutch MOV

What a question! Well, you came to the right place. Chinese food has been at the tippity-top of my favorite food list for over a decade now, and living in the MOV for the past 10 years hasn’t changed my fervor for it. After trying as many local establishments as I could find, my #1 recommendation for Chinese food in the MOV is hands down New China on the south side of Parkersburg. Located at 2518 Pike Street, a block away from Planet Fitness (New China was there first!), their menu has a full range of delicious dishes, ranging from chow mein to dumplings to stir fry, fried rice, egg rolls, and more. My personal favorite is their Beef & Broccoli dinner, served just right with a side of fried rice and an egg roll. If you’re extra hungry, order their cheese wontons as an appetizer. You will not regret it!

Sincerely,
