Marietta Main Street’s downtown flower program is a labor of love from start to finish every single year. Seeds are planted by February and tended to by Jay Huck and his team at Huck Greenhouse in Devola until volunteers are ready to hang all 300+ baskets in early May.
The petunias that hang on each lamp post downtown in 12″ hanging baskets will be on display through mid-September. In addition to the 12″ hanging baskets, eight 28″ wrap around baskets will be installed on the Putnam Street Bridge and three will be installed at the Armory.
Last year, Marietta Main Street’s Design Committee added a brand new opportunity for our community to celebrate Mother’s Day and downtown beautification at the same time. Community members are invited to sponsor downtown flower baskets In Honor of or In Memory of their mothers.
Funds raised through this effort go directly towards offsetting the ~$18,000 cost of planting and maintaining the flowers the whole summer through. This year, Marietta Main Street has expanded their downtown Flower Basket program to extend further into Harmar Village. Every year, Marietta Main Street raises money for this effort, primarily through grant funding.
Sponsored flower baskets will be accompanied by a prominent gift tag attached to the basket’s lamp post uplifting both the sponsor and the sponsor’s mother.
The cost to sponsor a hanging flower basket is just $50, which includes the gift tag, inclusion in Marietta Main Street’s list of sponsors, and a beautifully cared for and adored flower basket in downtown Marietta in the summer season.
Plus, and perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to honor the love we have for our mothers publicly as a community and adorn Marietta’s downtown lamp posts with the names of sponsors – the names of folks who care about Marietta – is a heartwarming one that Marietta Main Street is thrilled to offer.
The full list of sponsors and mothers will not be announced until after Thursday, May 9th, and flower baskets will be removed in mid-September. Gift tags will remain through mid-June.
The deadline to sponsor a basket in time for Mother’s Day is Wednesday, May 1st.
