Food trucks have been popping up in the MOV these past few years and I’m happy to report the newest addition can be found in St. Marys, W.Va. Scoops opened its doors this past June and has been churning out sweet confections including cookies, ice cream and coffee. With enticing flavors that vary based on seasonal availability (black raspberry, anyone?), your palate will never be disappointed.
What started as an idea turned into reality this past spring for Emily Powell and her sister. The two had talked of opening an ice cream/food truck for almost two years. Destiny dealt its hand when the owner of The Boxcar restaurant in St. Marys announced his fully equipped food trailer was for sale. The duo jumped at the chance to purchase the trailer and the Scoops food truck was born.Since its introduction to the MOV, Emily said the community response to Scoops has been nothing short of extraordinary. “When my sister and I opened Scoops this summer, we just thought it would be a nice little summer job – we had no idea we’d be as blessed as we have been!”
Not sure what to purchase at Scoops? Emily can help you out. “Currently, we offer hand-dipped ice cream from a locally owned creamery in Virginia, our homemade cookies from scratch and specialty coffee drinks! You can purchase these items individually, or we have several combination options.” Examples include their ice cream/cookie sandwiches, trio cup (a coffee float with your choice of cookie/ice cream) and loaded milkshakes (a coffee milkshake with a cookie crumble on top.) And if you’re planning on bringing your four-legged friends along, Scoops offers homemade dog treats for them as well!
I asked Emily what some of the customer favorites are and she exclaimed “Anything lemon crunch!” With this piece of information, I had to try the lemon crunch ice cream for myself. And I have to agree with the customers- it is absolutely phenomenal. I ordered mine as an ice cream sandwich. The ice cream was mildly sweet and the lemon flavor was pleasant and not overpowering. And what’s a good ice cream sandwich without two delicious cookies as your base? The sugar cookies that encompassed the lemon ice cream were soft and melted in my mouth. I can attest as to why the lemon crunch ice cream sandwich is a top seller. But don’t rely on the opinion of my taste buds – try one for yourself (and prepare to be amazed!)Some other fan favorites include the “Cookie Monster.” This concoction consists of a milkshake with coffee that’s paired with cookies and cream ice cream. It’s then topped with chocolate chip cookie bits. Concerning coffee, Emily said the iced caramel macchiato takes the gold as a customer favorite. I decided to branch out on my own with the coffee and tried the Campfire iced coffee. The coffee flavor was superb and the sweetness surrounding it added to its appeal (think s’mores flavoring, only in coffee form). Their menu board offers flavor options for those not sure where to begin. It’s as simple as picking a flavor and preparing for your taste buds to be wowed. Enticed yet? You should be. But hurry – Scoops is planning on closing for the season after Labor Day weekend, as the young entrepreneurs head back to school. The Scoops staff has enjoyed serving sweet treats to the community and engaging with their friendly and supportive customers. Emily summed it up: “We’re so grateful and can’t thank God enough for the unending support from our little hometown of St. Marys and all of the surrounding communities that have supported us! When my sister and I opened Scoops this summer, we just thought it would be a nice little summer job. We had no idea we’d be as blessed as we have been! So to everyone who’s purchased anything from a bottle of water to five ice cream sandwiches this summer, we want to sincerely say ‘thank you!’”Head to Scoops before they close for the season and help support another delicious food locale in the MOV!
