Every year, Marietta Main Street’s Design Committee coordinates volunteer events aimed at beautifying Marietta’s downtown community. These events prepare Marietta’s most walked and beloved commercial district for the spring and summer months full of events, festivals, tourism, late nights, and beautiful days.
Beautification efforts kick off this Saturday, April 27th with Main Street’s annual Clean Sweep event. This day of volunteerism requires all hands on deck to support beautification efforts downtown, including Harmar Village. Volunteers will be asked to weed and mulch downtown garden beds, sweep sidewalks, and pick up trash and debris. All volunteers are asked to meet at 7 a.m. at the Armory on Front Street to be assigned to projects in groups.
On Tuesday, May 7th, volunteers will be out bright and early at 6:00 a.m. to hang the purple wave petunias that have made Marietta famous. This year, Marietta Main Street is expanding their downtown flower program to extend farther into Harmar Village and is fundraising for this effort by selling flower basket sponsorships in time for Mother’s Day. Donors can sponsor a flower basket in memory of or in honor of their mother, or for someone special in their lives.
“I’m so excited for our annual clean up and the new flowers for our beautiful downtown!” said Sam Tuten, Marietta Main Street Executive Director. “The value of beautification is so beneficial as we are adding value to our public spaces. That value reiterates the history and uniqueness our downtown to our community.”
“All of this would not be possible without Jay Huck and Huck Greenhouses, the help of our volunteers, the City of Marietta, and of course our partners and donors,” said Sam.
You’re seen the work of Marietta Main Street’s volunteers before, when you noticed the well-manicured bump outs lining the streets, or looked up to see the flags flying or the petunias hanging on lamp posts throughout the city.
“Hanging our flower baskets and cleaning up downtown are both great community events, ” said Tim Glover, Marietta Main Street Board President. “In a historic town, the flowers provide a great pop of color. And maintenance of our downtown landscape shows that we take pride in our city.”
With sunshine in the forecast this Saturday, it’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy the spring weather and make a difference in the community at the same time. Bring a friend or your family, a comfortable pair of shoes, and get ready to do some good!
