Clutch MOV is partnering withDaVinci’s Italian Restaurant to kick off your weekends with Happy Hour! We’ll tempt your taste buds this week with a refreshing Moscow Mule. This popular drink features vodka, spicy ginger beer, and lime juice and is famously served in a copper mug.

According to a 1948 article in the New York Herald Tribune, “the mule was born in Manhattan but “stalled” on the West Coast,” citing New York’s Chatham Hotel as the original birthplace. Three friends were in the Chatham Bar: John “Jack” A. Morgan, president of Cock ‘n’ Bull Products; John G. Martin, president of G.F. Heublein Brothers Inc.; and Rudolph Kunett, president of the Pierra Smirnoff, Heublein’s vodka division.

“As Jack Morgan tells it, ‘We three were quaffing a slug, nibbling on hors d’oeuvre and shoving towards inventive genius.’ Martin and Kunett had their minds on their vodka and wondered what would happen if a two-ounce shot joined with Morgan’s ginger beer and the squeeze of lemon. Ice was ordered, lemons procured, mugs ushered in and the concoction put together. Cups were raised, the men counted five and down went the first taste. It was good. It lifted the spirit to adventure. Four or five days later, the mixture was christened the Moscow Mule.”

What you’ll need:

  • 2 shots of Vodka of choice
  • 1 shot of Lime Juice
  • 4 oz. of Ginger Beer
  • Slice of Lime
  • Copper Mug

Combine vodka and ginger beer in a copper mug or highball glass filled with ice. Add lime juice. Stir gently and garnish with the lime slice.
