This September, the historic Peoples Bank Theatre in downtown Marietta celebrates the end of summer with songs from Broadway, welcomes Marietta College families with comedian and magician Michael Kent, and screens the 20th Annual Manhattan Short Film Festival.

On September 16 at 8 p.m., Peoples Bank Theatre presents “Broadway Songs of a Summer Night.” Mid-Ohio Valley singers Su Voycik-Meredith, David Rexroad, Amanda DeBarr Stephens, and R.J. Lowe will provide a delightful menu of melodies from Broadway and the American Songbook, including Moondance, Shenandoah, Under the Boardwalk, Walkin’ After Midnight, Those Lazy, Crazy Days of Summer, as well as selections from Wicked, Cinderella, Porgy and Bess, and Follies. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $10 for Peoples Bank Theatre members.

Before the concert, the theatre will host a reception and art showing by artist Beth Nash, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. An instructor in the art department at Marietta College, Beth shows her work in art shows and galleries throughout the United States.

The following Friday, September 22, at 8 p.m., Peoples Bank Theatre and the Marietta College Pioneer Activities Council team up to present comedian and magician Michael Kent as part of Marietta College Family Weekend. In a style reminiscent of a late-night talk show host, Michael invites the audience to laugh with him at the absurdity of a modern-day magician. Michael’s audiences experience what it’s like when a stand-up comic performs (and occasionally pokes fun at) the art of magic. Kent has been named Entertainer of the Year by Campus Activities Magazine and has appeared at more than 500 college campuses, as well as before audiences across the globe, including U.S. troops serving overseas. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $10 for Marietta College students.

On September 28 and 29, the Manhattan Short Film Festival will screen at Peoples Bank Theatre at 7 p.m. each night. The global film festival is screening 10 finalists from among 1,615 entries from 75 countries. The Final 10 films represent independent filmmakers from the U.S., Georgia, Italy, Latvia, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, Syria, and the United Kingdom. These films will be screened before an audience of some 100,000 film-lovers in more than 250 venues the last week of September and first week of October. Peoples Bank Theatre is one of just four venues to screen the festival in Ohio.

The audience will not only be watching and enjoying the films, but judging them as well. Each audience member will be given a voting card upon entry and asked to vote for the one film they feel should win. Votes will be tallied at each participating cinema and submitted to festival headquarters where the winner will be announced in New York City at the conclusion of the festival’s run. (Parental note: These films are not rated. Some films may contain strong language or graphic scenes.) Tickets are $8. Students are admitted for $5 with valid ID.

Full event details and ticket information for these events and more are available online at peoplesbanktheatre.com or by calling the box office at 740-371-5152. Walk-up hours at the box office are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and one to two hours prior to most events.
