While our libraries are often some of our oldest community institutions, they can also be an inspiring source of innovation. Leave it to our local library to find a creative new use for the previously empty bank building in the Lafayette Plaza. Formerly the site of an Advantage Bank, it is now home to the newest addition to the Washington County Public Library family.

The Lafayette Plaza branch is a full service library featuring a drive-up window for library card holders to pick up reserved items, six public use computers, a color printer/scanner/copier, and a collection of popular books for children and adults. The location is unique to the library system as the entire contents are a browsing collection consisting of best sellers in various formats. Behind the library is a brand new garage housing the library’s Book Mobile, and in front sits a fully-stocked Little Free Library. While the selection is no comparison to the main branch on Fifth Street, the Lafayette Plaza offers the convenience of being able to easily pick up books and access all of the same amenities.

“The new library branch offers easier access for many of our patrons, with plenty of parking, a convenient drive-thru, and no stairs,” says Justin Mayo, WCPL Director.

The Washington County Public Library worked with local architecture, engineering and surveying firm Pickering Associates and Architect Barry Ingham on the design of the garage and renovation of the existing facility. Wolf Creek Construction out of Waterford, OH was hired to complete the construction. After months of work, the library is excited to welcome the public into their new space.

The WPCL is hosting the Grand Opening of the new Lafayette Plaza Library this Saturday, May 6th from 12-2pm at 748 Pike Street in Marietta. There will be food, giveaways, and a chance to tour the renovated building, check out materials, as well as see the bookmobile and garage.

The hours of the new location are: Sunday 12-5, Monday-Thursday 11-7, Friday 11-6, and Saturday 11-5.
