Sarah ArnoldA few years ago, design student Magda Lipka Falck decided to create an interactive project for her master’s thesis. As part of the graduate exhibit at Konstfack – an arts, crafts, and design university in Stockholm – she devised Anywhere–A Travel Guide. Unlike any guidebook you have ever seen, this guide was made up of 60 unique cards, each offering a suggestion that prompts you to engage with your surroundings. Instead of providing precise and site specific information, Magda’s cards encourage “spontaneity, curiosity, and adventurism,” each with an action that is applicable to any location, be it your hometown or a distant city. Her goal with this project was to give people an excuse to do things normally outside of their comfort zone, “but in small gestures, the details — the smells, colors, sounds.” The squish of sand between your toes, the sweet smell of salt water taffy, a particularly vibrant kite soaring overhead, the laughter of a friend — really, these are the things that make our experiences in this world memorable.
Smitten with this project, I was disappointed to find that Magda’s cards immediately sold out. It wasn’t until this Spring that I discovered Anywhere–A Travel Guide had been picked up by Chronicle Books, once again available for purchase. As someone who loves spontaneous travel and aimless walks in new cities, this deck of cards is sure to become a permanent travel companion of mine. I decided to give it a try right here in my city of Marietta one afternoon to see what I would find:
