Sure, the rest of West Virginia is getting lumped into this one person’s terrible comment, but trying to isolate her as a single villain when things like this get said more often than not is not an effective way to combat racism.

I don’t think this is a moment where we try to defend ourselves. This post certainly states that we should combat racism, but we really need to be careful about what our intentions are in doing so.

Racism comes in various ways–it can be overt, and it can be microaggressions that slip into everyday conversation. We are entirely capable of racism and we need to acknowledge this in order to strive to fight back against it.
