The voices portrayed by a mascot deserve to be the final arbitrators in wether the mascot is offensive to their heritage or not. It is not the decision of the academic institution that perpetuates it (especially at a public school). A school mascot is about as low on priority as it gets for social progress, so in my mind, this is a bare minimum effort. I hope the citizens of WV support this cause.

The fact that something is a tradition does not necessarily mean it is a good thing. Until the late 1930s, it was a tradition to not allow Native Americans to vote in all states. That’s a tradition many years older than the mascot, but that does not mean it is one we should support. If we want our species to prosper in the future, we must utilize one of our greatest assets: the ability to adapt and change, for the better.
