We have been restoring our 1910 sadly-neglected historic home for 25 years now. I wish I could say that we are close to done, but I cannot. The problem regarding historic preservation on an individual basis is lack of resources. We’ve spent untold amounts of money on this home, yet a beautifully restored large home across the street just sold for $200,000. As an investment, saving these homes is a losing proposition. We do it out of respect for this piece of incredible art that we inhabit and because we can afford it. Few in Marietta are in our position. The vast majority of homes in our downtown district are owned by landlords and marginally maintained. Every neighborhood features totally blighted properties, and in the next 20 years, most of the frame houses in downtown Marietta will fit this description. It would take hundreds of millions to save them, and that money will not be forthcoming. And the cost to tear them down will be significant, and likely borne by the taxpayers.

It has brought economic development, but most important is that it has brought the entertainment arts to the people of the Mid-Ohio Valley. It’s importance to the community cannot be underestimated. Continued support of the theater from all will only bring more preservation projects to the community. It is a shining star to follow!
